Positive Summer Bodies
Monday, July 8, 2019
Now that it's officially summer (even though the weather may disagree) its shorts season, its the season of tank tops, bathing suits and being outside. It's time to shed the layers, and with that time to shed our insecurities about our bodies. There are many women (and men!) I know who would prefer to suffer in the heat in full pants and a sweatshirt than let anyone see their legs, arms, etc. Why in the world should we suffer rather than be comfortable? Because society has told us our bodies need to be perfect, that our bodies should have no hair/cellulite/excess body fat in order to be ready for public consumption?
Fuck that narrative.
I say wear that crop top, tank top, show off your thighs. I totally 100% understand feeling insecure about my body, there are things I have been really really hard on myself for in the past. These things are things no one else notices but me. I have also noticed that the individuals who comment on others bodies are the ones who are insecure in their own bodies. Sooo:
- If you don't have something nice to say don't say anything at all.
- If you wouldn't say it to a friend, don't say it to yourself
- Wear whatever feels comfortable (that doesn't mean a sweatshirt in july, if you're at risk of overheating, that's not good)
- Dress for yourself. Or for your best friend.
- You're never "too" something for any outfit. Too big for shorts? NOPE. Too much skin showing? NOPE. Too much cellulite? HELLLL NAH.
Your body your choice in all regards, what you put on it, what you do with it, all that. My hope for anyone who reads this is to have one less moment of fear when getting dressed this summer, to enjoy the hot days a little bit more instead of hiding. I'll do my best to try to do the same, to own my body and be comfortable in my own skin; I have moments where the overarching narrative I've been fed my whole life infiltrates my brain and I think "I've got too much ____ for this outfit" which I know is bs. What helps me is supporting others, I raise myself up by raising others up too.
5 tips to practicing Body Positivity
Thursday, July 12, 2018
I think self love is super
important and talked multiple times about ways to become more body positive,
but I’m finding a bit of frustration within that. A particular problem I find is individuals preaching self love and body positivity but also preaching size-based
goals and who promote daily ab checks, before/after photos, half naked body
check ins, etc. This is a way in which we police our own bodies, checking every
single day to see if one part we have deemed problematic is getting better or
becoming worthier. I’m not saying there is anything inherently wrong with
wanting abs, but if it becomes to the point where you are policing your body every
day to see if it’s “better” while at the same time talking about self love, are
you practicing what you preach?
Some tips to help you practice
self love & body positivity
1. Be authentic:
If you’re struggling, talk about
it. We all struggle, no one feels 100% happy with themselves 100% of the time,
that doesn’t make you less of a body positive advocate. It makes you human.
2. Stop policing your body:
Progress pictures can
totally be helpful, especially when starting a new training protocol, but if
that’s the only way you’re measuring success, that might not leave you in a
very happy mind set. Try not to weigh yourself everyday, if you don’t take an
ab check selfie every morning it won’t stop your progress.
3. Make your goals for you:
My goals and success
are for me and me alone, the internet does not need to hear about it all the
time. Certain milestones? Sure! A particularly gruelling workout where I thought
I was gunna die but didn’t and it’s a miracle? Yasss, support that shit. But if
your goals are in place to make others happy (especially when that’s the internet)
that’s no good. Or if you feel your success is based on how many people comment/like a post, that's a horrible way to measure yourself.
4. Find like minded people:
I don’t follow any fitness
accounts that are all selfies, before and after pictures or gratuitous body shots.
Why? It’s not helpful for my mental health, it makes me feel bad. I am a strong,
fit, amazing person and scrolling through that makes me feel terrible, I don’t need
it. I follow individuals who are jazzed about working out, who come up with fun
workouts, who inspire me, especially people who offer scientifically sound advice
on injury prevention/rehab.
5. Talk to yourself like you’d talk to a friend:
I
would never tell a friend their love handles were looking flabby, why would I
say that shit to myself?

Florals/Sport style
Are florals ever not in for spring/summer? I love this print because it's super feminine in a style that reminds me of my sports bras. So it's hella comfy, unfortunately my bootay was too big for the matching bottoms, but I do love me a set.
I find this amazing and awesome especially because over the year's I've struggled with body image issues. Like everyone, there's bits and pieces I would obsess over, 10 years ago I would have never had the balls to do a post like this. After all my surgeries I decided my body was amazing and I would love it more, especially with all my badass scars.
Mix & Match
Mix and match is most certainly my go-to. Not everyone's tops and bottom halfs match in size! Mine certainly don't so it's awesome to find styles of bottoms you love and mix it with funky tops. This season this pineapple top is my favourite, because, pineapples!
Red Hot
A bright red bikini, need I say more? So good.
I wish my sunburn didn't perfectly match this suit though.......
The One Piece
Surprisingly this is my first one piece in years! But when I saw this pineapple print I fell in love. I wasn't expecting it to be so high cut in the booty area, can't say I'm mad though! Just glad I did those extra squats ;) I think I'll be getting more one pieces in the future, so cute! Also, throw a pair of shorts on and viola, you have a cute top

I like my clothing like I like my fitness, functional. I don't see the point of really complicated clothing or thing's that are just for show. My clothing needs to do double, triple, quadruple duty not just on the daily but for holidays too. I don't want to pack a bajillion things and then only wear it once (or worse, not at all!)
This simple denim dress from simons filled a whole in my heart I didn't even know existed. Is that a bad joke if I've had heart surgery? Moving on....
This dress is hella light weight so it was perfect to throw over my swim suit & keep the sun off a pretty nasty sunburn too. Besides denim goes with every colour or pattern of suit I could have packed.
And just like that I'm perfectly appropriate for a dinner date, looking done up but still totally comfortable on a vacation. I love that this denim dress is really soft, I've had some that were super stiff denim and that's no bueno when it's hot and you're burnt to a crisp. Also it's from their sustainable/eco friendly collection, so a purchase I felt good about. A couple pieces of gold jewelry and a belt are all the accessories needed. Oh and my super cool, fabulous all inclusive wrist band....it got me free tequila, so it stays.
Outfit: Bikini top-zaful, bottoms-Rip curl(the best ones ever, way cheekier in real life), Hat-Ardene, belt/dress-simons, necklaces- Miss boss, Red ribbon (longer), ring-Saraswati designs, Shoes-Aldo
